On Tuesday Feb 12, 2019, Gilroy FFA Chapter Advisors, Chelsi Faria and Elida Moore, took seven FFA seniors to the 2019 World Ag Expo in Tulare, California. The World Ag Expo is the largest annual outdoor agricultural exposition which is held at the International Agri-Center in Tulare every year. Although they had an early start, Andrew, Becka, Dillania, Emily, John, Lani, and Miranda were excited to embark on a trip that would expand their knowledge on the ag industry and its new technologies and innovations. After a long drive filled with napping and music, the seven students, plus Ms. Faria, Ms. Moore, and Odie (service dog in training), made it into the 52nd World Ag Expo!!!! The students had many opportunities to learn about different aspects of the agriculture industry such as water irrigation systems, dairy products, college options, consumer products, plant genetics, tractors, and much more.
Dillania and Andrew talked to college representatives from Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, and CSU Fresno. Dillania also got to talk with our FFA State officers and reminisce memories of leadership conferences where they met. The two of them also got lost until in the huge event until they realized they had walked in a huge circle! John, Miranda, Emily, Becka, and Lani went in a different direction sightseeing many other amazing ag innovations such as tools for livestock and crop maintenance. They were also on the hunt to find the "falcon man" an exhibitor with falcons on display. After walking all day they found themselves quite tired and hitched a ride on a tram were they continued to sight see all that the World Ag Expo has to offer! The students ate well with a huge selection of tasty food from the food alley including Portuguese selections served by Ms. Faria's family.
One of our newest members of our FFA family, Odette, a service dog in training, had a lot of great training walking in a packed crowd and ignoring the loud noises and stayed focused on her handler. The students said good bye to the Expo after a long but fun filled day. On the way home Miranda got to check off a life long dream and visited a Super Target in Tulare. She was overfilled with joyful tears to see 24 check-out lanes, clothes, AND groceries. They were also able to get their favorite coffee place, Dutch Bros!
The students really enjoyed themselves and soaked in all that they could on such a great trip! They learned a lot about the different aspect of the agriculture industry and how truly big it is! They would like to thank their advisors for providing such a great experience for them to enrich their passion of agriculture.
